The next generation of BMW's X5, codenamed G65, will not focus on substantially improving its off-road performance. Philipp von Sahr, Senior Vice President for Luxury Class Vehicles, BMW ALPINA, and Rolls-Royce, stated during a media roundtable that off-road enhancements were not a core priority.

Von Sahr explained that engineering resources were directed towards other dimensions for the new X5. He noted that the vehicle's capabilities have been broadened in areas such as increased dimensions, enhanced load capacity, and more diverse powertrain options. Significant improvements in fuel efficiency and driving dynamics, facilitated by "Heart of Joy" technology, were also highlighted.

According to BMW, this iteration represents the most versatile X5 to date. While acknowledging the previous generation's surprising off-road prowess, the company suggests that customers rarely push the vehicle to its extreme limits. The focus remains on a holistic enhancement of the luxury SUV's overall performance and usability.

Information also suggests BMW is working on a new, larger SUV project, codenamed G74, expected around 2029. Internally referred to as "Rugged," this vehicle is intended for adventure scenarios and is anticipated to feature a three-row seating configuration, distinguishing it from the X5. It is conceptualized as more than just a modified X5, potentially including features like rear-facing jump seats.
