BMW i1 Electric Model Confirmed for 2028 Launch
BMW has confirmed plans to introduce a new entry-level electric vehicle, tentatively named i1, set to launch in Europe in 2028. The car will utilize a dedicated electric platform and is expected to be BMW's most affordable new-generation model.

Munich – Automaker BMW has confirmed the development of a new, more affordable all-electric vehicle, tentatively named the i1. The vehicle is anticipated to arrive on European markets in 2028 and is set to become the least expensive model in BMW's new generation.
The model, internally codenamed "NB0," will feature a five-door hatchback design. It is designed to employ a dedicated electric vehicle platform and is expected to reintroduce rear-wheel drive, a layout previously prominent in BMW's compact cars. While the i1 will be sold alongside the combustion-engine 1 Series, they will not share the same platform.
BMW intends to position the i1 between the electric MINI Cooper and its iX1 and iX2 models. The company also anticipates the MINI brand will adopt similar new-generation electric technology in the future. Reports suggest the current combustion-engine 1 Series will remain in production until at least the early 2030s.
Additionally, BMW is developing a four-door electric coupe, codenamed "NB8," scheduled for release around 2030. This model is expected to serve as a sedan counterpart to the i1, expanding BMW's electric offerings with its latest platform technology.
