BMW integrates driving assist system information into 3D map view
BMW aims to enhance driver trust and understanding of its driving assist systems by integrating information into a unified 3D map view. Starting October 2026, navigation data and the system's perception of its surroundings will be displayed together.
Munich – BMW is introducing a new feature designed to improve driver understanding and trust in its advanced driving assistance systems. Starting in October 2026, BMW Maps will integrate route navigation, the vehicle's perceived surroundings, and driving assist system information into a single, unified 3D view on the central display.
The system will accurately position the vehicle within its lane and on the correct road level, which is particularly beneficial in complex scenarios like junctions, intersections, and multi-lane urban roads. Previously, drivers had to interpret navigation and assist system information separately. The new interface will clearly show which driving assist functions are active and how the vehicle interprets the current road situation.
BMW clarifies that this visual enhancement does not directly improve the vehicle's semi-autonomous driving capabilities. However, it will work in conjunction with features like Highway Assistant 2, which allows for automated acceleration, braking, and steering at speeds up to 81 mph (approx. 130 km/h) on approved highways, provided the driver remains attentive.
The rollout of this feature will initially be limited to vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System X and either the Highway Assistant or Highway & City Assistant. The functionality will be gradually expanded to cover specific countries, cities, and road segments.
