BMW M Head: Electric M3 to be "Nemesis" of Gasoline Version
BMW M division head Frank van Meel has stated that the upcoming electric M3 will directly compete with the gasoline-powered version and may even become its "nemesis." Both variants will be sold concurrently.
BMW is preparing to launch the next generation of its M3 model with both internal combustion and fully electric variants. Frank van Meel, head of BMW's M performance division, indicated that the electric M3 is poised to directly challenge the gasoline-powered version, potentially becoming its "nemesis."
The strategy involves selling both powertrain options concurrently, fostering internal competition within the brand. "We are starting to compete with ourselves," van Meel commented. "The electric M3 will directly challenge one of BMW M's best-selling products, while the gasoline M3 remains the segment leader."
The gasoline version will continue with its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, maintaining its current output of 375 kW after upgrades while meeting EU7 emissions standards. In contrast, the electric M3 will feature a quad-motor setup designed to enhance dynamic performance and agility rather than solely focusing on peak power.
Van Meel emphasized that the electric model's primary advantage lies in its ability to control vehicle attitude and nimbleness. "We are not just focusing on increasing peak power, as excessive power may not be effectively transferred to the road," he explained. "We have four electric motors, but we will not deploy them all simultaneously."
