BMW patents dual-compartment trunk design
German automaker BMW has filed a patent for a novel dual-compartment trunk, allowing for independent opening of storage areas to enhance organization and accessibility.

BMW, the German automotive manufacturer, has submitted a patent application for a two-tiered trunk design aimed at providing distinct and independently accessible storage compartments.
The patent outlines a system where the trunk is divided into two separate storage areas, each equipped with its own opening mechanism. The upper compartment, situated closer to the tailgate, is intended for frequently accessed items. The lower compartment, positioned deeper within the trunk, is designed to accommodate larger luggage, wet or dirty gear, or charging cables, facilitating a clean separation of items.
This design allows users to open either compartment individually, avoiding the need to open the entire trunk for smaller tasks. This feature is particularly beneficial in confined spaces, such as parking garages, or for quick access to specific items.
The two compartments would feature independent sealing and locking structures. BMW engineers could flexibly adjust the volume ratio between the two sections based on the vehicle's positioning and model. The patent suggests the system could be adapted for both conventional combustion engine vehicles and new electric platforms.
As with most patent applications, there is no guarantee that this technology will reach mass production. Patents often serve as a company's technological reserve, and the final implementation depends on various factors including structural integrity, manufacturing costs, and safety regulations.
