BMW Recalls Over 150,000 Vehicles for Defect Issues

BMW (China) Auto Trade Co., Ltd. and Brilliance BMW Automotive Co., Ltd. have initiated a broad recall affecting more than 150,000 imported and China-manufactured vehicles. The recalls are addressing potential defects related to starter motor function and braking system software.

A range of models are affected, including the 2, 4, 5, 6 Series, as well as X4, X5, X6, Z4, 7 Series, and MINI JCW Countryman. The vehicles were manufactured between 2016 and 2025.

The largest recall covers over 93,000 imported BMW vehicles with a potential starter motor defect. After multiple starts, wear inside the starter motor could make it difficult to start the vehicle and, in extreme cases, lead to a short circuit and overheating, posing a fire risk. The company will provide a free replacement starter motor.

Additionally, approximately 57,000 domestically produced 5 Series models from 2017-2020 and about 360 imported 7 Series models from 2016-2018 are being recalled due to faulty starter motor relays. Water ingress can cause corrosion and short circuits, increasing fire risk. These vehicles will receive an improved starter motor.

Finally, a smaller recall involves around 200 vehicles where a software update for the integrated brake control (DSCi) was not successfully applied during previous recalls. This could prevent warning messages from being issued regarding potential risks. The issue will be resolved with a reinstallation of the vehicle's diagnostic software and a potential replacement of the DSCi component.
