BMW recalls over 7,000 vehicles due to potential drivetrain interruption risk

BMW China has announced a recall affecting over 7,000 imported vehicles, citing a potential issue that could lead to a loss of power to the rear axle. The recall covers specific 5 Series, 7 Series, and 8 Series models manufactured between March 2021 and January 2025.

The issue stems from the splined connection between the driveshaft and the rear axle differential. According to the company, prolonged use can cause excessive wear on the splines, potentially leading to the connection failing. If this occurs, power cannot be effectively transmitted to the rear axle, creating a safety hazard.

The affected vehicles include 4,651 units of the imported 5 Series, 27 units of the 7 Series, and 2,403 units of the 8 Series. The manufacturing dates for these vehicles range from March 15, 2021, to January 9, 2025, depending on the specific model.

BMW China will offer free inspections of the affected connection. If wear is found, the driveshaft and/or rear axle differential will be replaced. A special adhesive will also be applied during reassembly to ensure a secure connection and mitigate the risk.
