BMW updates electric powertrain technology for 2027 vehicle lineup

BMW has introduced significant hardware updates to its electric vehicle platform, moving away from prismatic battery cells in favor of more energy-dense cylindrical alternatives. The shift is part of the automaker's strategy to refine performance and efficiency across its high-end sedans and SUVs, including the upcoming 2027 i7.

Beyond battery chemistry, the company has overhauled its motor drive units. By integrating silicon carbide inverters and more compact packaging, BMW aims to improve the output and footprint of its electrically excited synchronous motors. This approach differentiates BMW from competitors who often maintain separate, distinct platforms for internal combustion and electric vehicles.

The technical changes also extend to the vehicle's electronic architecture. BMW is migrating from legacy control units to a centralized system governed by powerful domain controllers. This transition is expected to increase processing speeds, enhance chassis control, and provide a more robust framework for over-the-air software updates as the company prepares for its 'Neue Klasse' vehicle family.
