Automaker BMW has released its new 3 Series, offering it in both a gasoline-powered and a fully electric variant. When comparing similar trims, the electric vehicle is priced $4,400 less than the gasoline version.
The M350 xDrive, powered by gasoline, will cost $65,900, while the all-electric i3 50 xDrive is priced at $61,500. These prices exclude destination charges for both models. The vehicles share similar performance capabilities and styling, targeting a comparable market segment.
This price difference makes the electric variant 6.7% more affordable. This marks a significant development in the adoption of electric vehicles, demonstrating their potential to compete on price with internal combustion engine cars. Industry analysts have predicted that electric vehicles would reach price parity with gasoline cars by the mid-2020s.
BMW's strategy to offer the same car model with two distinct powertrains simplifies consumer comparison and choice. While cheaper gasoline-powered 3 Series trims exist, they do not yet have a direct electric equivalent.
