BOE Founder Wang Dongsheng Launches New Chip Company ESWIN Computing

Wang Dongsheng, who previously built China's massive display manufacturer BOE, has launched a new technology venture, ESWIN Computing. The company is focusing on the open-source RISC-V instruction-set architecture and is preparing to list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

BOE, founded by Wang in 1993, grew into one of the world's largest suppliers of display panels for electronics. After stepping down from BOE's chairmanship in 2019, Wang, at 62, embarked on this new endeavor with ESWIN Computing. The company aims to leverage RISC-V, an open standard attracting developers in embedded systems, automotive, robotics, and AI.

ESWIN Computing announced its initial public offering, aiming to raise capital by listing 1.57 billion H shares on the Hong Kong stock market, with trading expected to commence on October 9. The proposed share price range is between HK$1.48 and HK$1.59.

Similar to BOE's origins, ESWIN was established amid China's push for greater control over foundational electronics technologies, requiring substantial investment. ESWIN operates largely as a fabless semiconductor company, designing chips and software while outsourcing fabrication.

The success of ESWIN's IPO and future growth will depend on its ability to expand its expertise from display chips to broader computing applications and replicate Wang's previous industrial transformation in a competitive market.
