Bombay High Court restricts unauthorized use of Ananya Panday’s likeness

The Bombay High Court has issued an interim order blocking the unauthorized use of actor Ananya Panday’s identity, including deepfakes, AI chatbots, and counterfeit merchandise.

6 November 2026

On November 5, 2026, the Bombay High Court granted an interim injunction protecting actor Ananya Panday’s name, voice, signature, and likeness from unauthorized exploitation. Justice Madhav Jamdar ruled that the misuse of her personality attributes violated her rights to privacy and publicity.

The court’s order addresses a range of digital infringements, including AI-generated chatbots that impersonate the actor and sexually explicit deepfake content circulating on major platforms such as Meta, X, and Reddit. Additionally, the ruling targets the unauthorized sale of merchandise and fraudulent professional booking claims made by talent agencies.

The judiciary has mandated that Amazon and Flipkart remove infringing product listings, while directing domain registrars and government authorities to block websites hosting illicit content. This decision aligns with a growing trend of Indian courts issuing personality rights protections for public figures, highlighting the legal challenges posed by generative AI and digital impersonation.
