Bonn Closes North Bridge Indefinitely

The Rhine bridge in Bonn, also known as the North Bridge on the A565 motorway, has been closed to traffic indefinitely. The closure, enacted on Wednesday, June 3rd at 3 PM, is a result of structural damage to the bridge's load-bearing components, as reported by Autobahn GmbH of Germany. The decision prioritizes the safety of daily users.

This bridge serves as a vital east-west connection for the Bonn/Rhein-Sieg region, handling an estimated 100,000 vehicles daily. Its closure has led to significant traffic congestion and extensive detours, impacting commuters and long-distance travelers alike. Commute times have reportedly increased by up to 50 minutes in the direction of Bonn.

Michael Güntner, head of Autobahn GmbH, stated that resolving the issues with the Bonn North Bridge is the company's utmost priority. However, it remains uncertain if the bridge can ever be reopened. The structure, built in the 1960s, has shown numerous signs of wear and tear, alongside static problems. A replacement is projected to begin construction in the 2030s.

To alleviate some traffic pressure, adjacent access points at Bonn-Beuel and Bonn-Auerberg will be reopened. While this shortens the closed section of the A565, vehicles will not be able to cross the bridge itself.

Diversions are in place for long-distance traffic. South of Bonn, the Konrad-Adenauer Bridge (A562) serves as an alternative crossing. To the north, traffic is being rerouted via the Rodenkirchener Bridge (A4) in southern Cologne.

Furthermore, the city of Bonn is planning a package of measures including potential park-and-ride facilities, additional shuttle bus services, and free public transport until the end of June to ease the traffic burden.
