The index, released on August 20, 2026, considered factors such as population density and human-generated noise to objectively measure the level of quietude. This report arrives amidst a significant surge in online searches for "quiet destinations," indicating growing traveler interest in secluded locations.
Beyond Stewart Island, the index also highlighted locations such as Canada's Haida Gwaii archipelago and Australia's Fraser Island. The Unspoilt Index aims to provide travelers with objective information to find destinations that maintain their natural serenity and avoid over-development.
