Borealis Data Center faces $6.6 million lawsuit over hardware lease

Icelandic data center operator Borealis Data Center is being sued in Reykjavik District Court over a dispute regarding a bitcoin mining equipment lease agreement.

3 November 2026

Borealis Data Center, a major operator of digital infrastructure in Iceland, is facing legal action from Adomat & Heidenblut M 1 ehf. The lawsuit, filed in the Reykjavik District Court, concerns an alleged breach of a leasing agreement for nearly 2,000 specialized bitcoin-mining computers originally signed in June 2022.

The claimant, an Icelandic firm associated with the German CT Cap group, is seeking $6.6 million in damages. Borealis Data Center is majority-owned—at 92.2%—by the French infrastructure investment firm Vauban Infrastructure Partners, which has invested heavily in Icelandic energy-intensive facilities.

This litigation highlights the operational risks inherent in high-spec hardware leasing for the volatile cryptocurrency sector. The dispute suggests a potential breakdown in commercial relations between the operator and the equipment provider as market conditions for mining equipment fluctuate.

The court will now determine the validity of the breach of contract claims. The outcome of the case will clarify the financial liability of Borealis Data Center regarding the equipment in question.
