Bosch and RWTH Aachen University Partner on Robot 3D Environment Understanding
Robert Bosch GmbH is collaborating with RWTH Aachen University to develop AI-powered solutions for autonomous mobile robots to understand their 3D environments, particularly addressing data scarcity in industrial settings.

Renningen, Germany – Robert Bosch GmbH has entered into a research collaboration with RWTH Aachen University to develop advanced solutions for the 3D environment recognition capabilities of autonomous mobile robots. The project specifically targets the challenges posed by limited data availability in industrial application scenarios.
The partnership aims to equip mobile robots with sophisticated AI-based 3D scene understanding, enabling them to navigate and operate effectively in complex environments like factories and warehouses. This addresses the difficulty of training AI models when large, annotated datasets, common in fields like autonomous driving, are scarce for industrial robotics.
The multi-year collaboration, running from 2022 through 2025, will focus on data-efficient learning methods. These include self-supervised learning and leveraging large pre-trained models to build robust algorithms suitable for real-world industrial applications. Bosch Research is providing financial support and facilitating the research.
Beyond scientific publications, the initiative aims to provide young researchers with practical experience on relevant industrial robotics challenges. The ultimate goal is to accelerate the development of intelligent autonomous systems that can interact more intuitively and efficiently with human workers.
