Bosch Continues Electric Machine Research

Robert Bosch GmbH is continuing its significant research and development efforts in electric machines, encompassing motors and generators.

While the fundamental principles of electric machines date back over a century, Bosch emphasizes that the field remains an active area of research. The company has integrated electric motors into a wide array of products, from its early magneto ignition systems in the late 1800s to modern automotive components such as alternators, electric wiper motors, ABS motors, and electric steering systems.

Bosch's products also widely utilize electric motors in applications ranging from power tools and household appliances to e-bikes. Continuous improvements in power density and efficiency are being pursued through ongoing innovations in materials, manufacturing processes, advanced calculation methods, and electronics.

Traditionally optimized for grid operation, advances in power electronics have enabled improved speed control and efficiency. Currently, battery-powered systems are particularly crucial, especially in electromobility. Electric machines also play a vital role in combating climate change, serving as generators in wind turbines or as drive motors in electric vehicles.
