Bosch fuel cell module wins German Future Prize
Robert Bosch GmbH's research and development team has been awarded the prestigious German Future Prize for its fuel cell power module, designed for heavy-duty transport and enabling CO2-free mobility.
A research and development team from Robert Bosch GmbH has received the German Future Prize (Deutscher Zukunftspreis) for its innovative Fuel Cell Power Module (FCPM). The award recognizes the system's contribution to climate-neutral mobility, particularly in the heavy-duty transport sector.
The FCPM converts hydrogen and oxygen into electrical energy, allowing commercial vehicles to achieve long distances with zero CO2 emissions when using green hydrogen. This technology addresses a significant environmental challenge, as heavy trucks account for over a quarter of CO2 emissions from road transport in the EU.
"This award is outstanding recognition for our entire team. It demonstrates the innovative potential of hydrogen and the decisive role Bosch is playing in it," stated Dr. Stefan Hartung, Chairman of the Board of Management of Robert Bosch GmbH. Large-scale production of the module began in 2023 at the Stuttgart-Feuerbach plant and in Chongqing, China.
Bosch's module comprises over a thousand individual parts, making it one of the company's most complex systems. It can be installed in trucks as a replacement for combustion engines, offering a range of approximately 1,000 kilometers on a single tank of hydrogen. Thousands of trucks worldwide are already equipped with Bosch's fuel cell system, and data gathered from these vehicles is being used for further development.
