Bosch: Junkers and Bauhaus design collaboration in thermotechnology

Robert Bosch GmbH's Thermotechnology division traces its origins back to the 1920s, a period marked by a significant collaboration between Junkers & Co. GmbH and the Staatliches Bauhaus art school.

Amidst Germany's severe hyperinflation in 1923, Junkers, a pioneer in heating and hot water solutions, showcased its products at the inaugural Bauhaus exhibition. This partnership was a natural extension of company director Hugo Junkers' academic background and his belief in the benefits of industry-university cooperation.

The collaboration with Bauhaus artists led to innovative solutions and modern presentations of Junkers products. A notable outcome was Junkers' "flying person" logo, designed by Friedrich Peter Drömmer. The logo solidified the company's brand identity for decades and was part of a broader effort to standardize advertising with clear geometric forms and objectivity, embodying the Bauhaus style.

Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius and Hugo Junkers shared a close relationship, which directly influenced Junkers' products. For instance, Junkers' gas-powered hot water systems were installed in the kitchen and bathroom of the Bauhaus model house, Haus am Horn, exemplifying the fusion of functionality and design.

As the Bosch Home Comfort division, the company continues to integrate technology and design in its home comfort products, drawing on the legacy of this historical partnership.
