Bosch launched gasoline injection system for passenger cars in 1951

Robert Bosch GmbH launched its first gasoline injection system for passenger car engines in 1951. What began as a specialized solution for small, fuel-inefficient two-stroke engines evolved into a significant business segment for the company, shaping its automotive technology activities for decades.

The system, designated PFM2, replaced traditional carburetors. The first customer was automaker Gutbrod for its Superior model, followed by Goliath, which equipped its vans with the fuel injection technology. This made the vehicles more fuel-efficient and powerful.

Bosch's expertise in fluid delivery systems was built over decades, starting with lubrication pumps in 1909 and diesel injection systems from 1927. The company had also developed injection pumps for aircraft engines starting in 1930 to enhance performance and reliability in difficult flight conditions.

Following World War II, restrictions on aircraft technology manufacturing led Bosch to pivot its expertise. As motorization increased in Europe, the demand grew for more efficient engine technologies, a demand Bosch's fuel injection systems were well-positioned to meet.
