Bosch ranks high in hydrogen technology patents
A new joint study by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) reveals German companies lead in hydrogen technology patents in Europe. Bosch ranks 11th globally among hydrogen innovators.

Robert Bosch GmbH has emerged as a significant player in hydrogen technology development, securing the 11th position globally among innovators in the field, according to a new study by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the International Energy Agency (IEA). The report analyzed patents related to hydrogen technologies filed between 2011 and 2020.
Germany leads Europe in hydrogen innovations, with Bosch playing a crucial role. The company demonstrates particular strength in patent applications for hydrogen technologies related to storage and distribution, where it holds the top position within the supplier industry. In automotive applications, Bosch ranks eighth, standing as the sole supplier among nine automotive OEMs.
Bosch Research has been instrumental in the company's success. The research division has undertaken pioneering work, particularly in mobile fuel cell systems and components, as well as stationary solid oxide fuel cells for power generation. These technologies also form the basis for electrolysis systems that produce hydrogen. Bosch has been researching mobile fuel cells since the 1990s.
Peter Wolfangel, Executive Vice President of Robert Bosch GmbH's Corporate Sector Research and Advance Engineering, expressed satisfaction with the company's international performance in hydrogen innovations. He highlighted that decades of basic research and advanced development in fuel cell technology are increasingly being brought to market maturity through Bosch's business divisions. This progress solidifies the company's leading position in the sector and contributes to climate protection efforts.
