Bose Adds Auracast Support to Headphones Via Firmware Update

Bose has begun rolling out Auracast audio-sharing capabilities to its flagship headphones via a new firmware update.

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones Gen 2, priced at $449, are now receiving support for Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast as a beta feature. This technology allows for wireless audio streaming to multiple devices simultaneously, and Bose plans to bring it to more devices soon.

Auracast is currently available on a limited number of consumer headphones from major manufacturers like Sony, JBL, Samsung, and Sennheiser, with some smaller companies also adopting the standard. As one of the most recognized names in the headphone market, Bose's adoption of Auracast is a significant development for the technology's wider acceptance.

The standard enables users to tune into public broadcasts, such as those at airports or exhibition centers, directly through their headphones without the need for separate receivers or cables. Auracast is built on the Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) Audio standard, which also promises improved audio quality and power efficiency over older Bluetooth versions.

Bose has not provided a specific timeline for when Auracast support will extend to other models, but indicated it will be available "soon." Users will need to download the latest firmware update via the Bose Music app to enable the new features.
