Bots Now Account for Majority of Web Traffic, Cloudflare Reports

Bots have officially become the majority of internet traffic, surpassing human users for the first time. Cloudflare, a major internet infrastructure provider, reported that bots now generate 57.5% of all web page requests, a milestone that arrived more than a year earlier than predicted by the company's own CEO.

While specific timelines vary between different industry reports, the consensus is clear: machines are now the dominant force online. This fundamental change undermines the internet's primary business model, which has relied for 30 years on the assumption that visitors are human. The advertising-driven model, established in the 1990s, offered 'free' content in exchange for user attention and data.

Human Security's benchmark report indicated an 7,851% year-over-year increase in traffic from AI agents that click links, fill forms, and complete actions. Fintech platform Stripe notes that approximately 70% of commands hitting its data APIs now originate from agents rather than people.

Companies like Visa and Stripe are responding by developing agent-facing interfaces. Advertisers must now confront a drastically altered landscape where the attention economy's premise—that humans can be swayed by ads—is failing. Experts liken this moment to a turning point in technological revolutions, where established business models break down and new ones must emerge.

The future may see content directly licensed to machine agents, shifting away from its role as bait for eyeballs. While the scale of this 'machine economy' is still small compared to its potential, the rules for the next phase of the internet are actively being written.
