Bouygues Construction Awarded Expanded €1.2 Billion Contract for Australian Data Centre

Bouygues Construction, through its Australian subsidiary A W Edwards, has been awarded an expanded contract valued at €1.2 billion by hyperscale data centre specialist AirTrunk. The agreement covers the continued delivery of the SYD3 campus in Western Sydney, Australia.

The project is set to facilitate the development of more than 400 megawatts (MW) of data centre capacity. This expansion aims to bolster Australia's digital infrastructure in response to growing demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and enterprise digital services. The SYD3 expansion is part of AirTrunk's larger investment strategy in Australia, which includes over €6.4 billion previously invested across four sites.

Construction work is slated to begin this month, with an expected completion date by mid-2028. The project anticipates creating significant job opportunities, projecting a total of 10,000 jobs throughout the construction phase. Environmental considerations include the use of low-carbon concrete and 100% Australian-made steel reinforcement, with a target to divert 90% of non-hazardous construction waste from landfills through a circular economy solution.

This development will provide essential data storage and processing capabilities, supporting Australia's burgeoning digital economy and offering long-term economic benefits to the Western Sydney region, including supply chain opportunities and local economic activity.
