BP Shipping Marks 100 Years of Maritime Operations
BP Shipping celebrates its centenary on April 30, 2015, marking 100 years since its founding as the British Tanker Company. The company has navigated major global events and contributed to shipping safety standards.

BP Shipping marks its 100-year anniversary on April 30, 2015, as the longest continually operating entity within the BP group. Established in 1915 as the British Tanker Company, the business has adapted through significant historical periods, including two world wars, the Great Depression, and Suez Canal closures.
The company has been instrumental in oil and gas transportation, overseeing the construction of over 500 tankers throughout its history. Currently, BP Shipping operates approximately 50 owned oil and gas carriers and charters an additional 200 large vessels and 400 smaller ones for various hydrocarbon cargoes.
BP Shipping has also been a proponent of enhanced maritime safety and environmental practices, implementing technologies like inert gas systems and double hulls. Its involvement extends to the design and development of specialized vessels supporting offshore oil and gas exploration.
CEO John Ridgway, who is retiring after the centenary, expressed pride in the company's legacy. The firm has consistently contributed to industry advancements, influencing safety regulations and operational standards. Susan Dio is set to take over leadership.
