Brands' Advent Calendars Sell Out Amid Retail's Expensive Holiday Push

Consumer brands have begun rolling out their annual advent calendars, with prices often reaching hundreds of dollars. These limited-edition product sampling boxes, originally a German Christmas tradition, have become significantly commercialized, aiming to capitalize on the busy fourth-quarter holiday shopping season.

The offerings span a wide range of products, from coffee and tea selections to cosmetics and spirits. For instance, Fly By Jing, a Chinese packaged food brand, launched two distinct advent calendars. Their 12-day calendar is priced at $98, and the 24-day version costs $175. The company warned customers that the products were limited and sold out by early November last year.

French skincare and beauty brand Typology released a 24-day advent calendar for approximately $285, highlighting a trend of premium-priced holiday countdowns becoming more common. While many consumers start their holiday shopping in October, these specialized products attract early buyers.

Projections indicate that U.S. retail sales in November and December are expected to exceed $1 trillion for the first time, marking a 4.5 percent increase from the previous year. The National Retail Federation (NRF) forecasts total sales up to $5.6 trillion, considering a longer shopping season that begins as early as October. Brands are seeking to maximize their sales in this competitive landscape.
