Bridging Digital Literacy Gap Could Add Trillions to Global GDP

A new report by GSMA Intelligence in partnership with Huawei, presented during UNESCO's Digital Learning Week, identifies a substantial obstacle to global economic growth. The research indicates that nearly two-thirds of the world's population (62%) are either only partially participating or entirely excluded from the digital economy.

The study suggests that improving digital literacy and connectivity could contribute as much as $3.5 trillion to the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP). While mobile technology has expanded connectivity, a significant portion of the population, particularly in developing nations, still lacks essential digital skills and access.

GSMA Intelligence and Huawei are calling for collaborative efforts between governments, industry stakeholders, and civil society organizations. The objective is to foster digital literacy and enhance internet accessibility worldwide. This initiative involves investing in education, infrastructure development, and ensuring the availability of digital services.

According to the report, narrowing the digital divide will not only stimulate economic expansion but also promote social inclusion and create new opportunities for millions globally.
