Brim's factory trawler Örfirisey completes first trip after pause with good catch

Brim hf.'s factory trawler Örfirisey returned to Reykjavik on Tuesday, concluding its first trip following a pause for Seamen's Day. The vessel reported an estimated catch of 1,100 tonnes, with its production facilities operating continuously during the voyage.

According to skipper Arnar Haukur Ævarsson, the trip began in the Skerja Deeps, yielding significant amounts of deep-sea redfish and silver smelt. He noted an unusually strong presence of deep-sea redfish this year.

The trawler made a partial landing in Reykjavik on June 23rd after failing to locate sufficient volumes of saithe. The voyage then proceeded to the Westfjords, where the crew experienced good fishing for haddock and cod.

Ævarsson commented that while fishing conditions were generally favorable, quotas for certain species, like golden redfish, were becoming tight as the season progressed. He also cited the war in Ukraine as a factor, which would have normally allowed for fishing in the Russian sector of the Barents Sea at this time.
