Brim's Fishing Trip: Weather Limited Catches, Pollack and Cod Secured
A fishing trip aboard the Icelandic vessel Helga María AK faced challenges due to severe weather, but resulted in a significant catch of pollack and cod.
The Icelandic fishing vessel Helga María AK concluded its recent trip from Reykjavik, landing nearly 150 tons of catch after departing the port in late October 2021.
Captain Friðleifur Einarsson reported that weather conditions significantly hampered fishing operations. For several weeks, continuous severe storms had made fishing grounds in the Westfjords virtually inaccessible. The vessel managed only brief fishing periods in Þverálur and Heiðardalur before another storm forced them south of Iceland.
"We have essentially been fishing in our own home waters," Einarsson stated. He noted that the majority of the catch consisted of pollack, with some cod also secured. The captain also mentioned that "gullkarfi" (a type of fish) was caught in large quantities as bycatch, but was not actively targeted due to the abundance of other species.
Despite the adverse weather, Einarsson expressed satisfaction with the overall results of the fishing trip. He emphasized that fishermen cannot control the weather but expressed hope for continued good pollack catches. The vessel returned to Reykjavik on October 29, 2021.
