Brim's Trawler Nearing Full Capacity

Brim's fresh trawler Viðey is approaching its full capacity during a fishing trip off the southwest coast of Iceland. The vessel has collected approximately 180 tonnes of fish, with a goal of adding another ten tonnes before docking.

The trip began with inconsistent fishing conditions, a common occurrence. Significant time was spent steaming between areas to locate specific species, primarily saithe, which is currently in high demand among fishermen.

Skipper Jóhannes Ellert Eiríksson reported that finding saithe proved difficult. The vessel initially fished off the south coast before moving to the Hali grounds off the west coast, but the fishing conditions deteriorated by the time they arrived. They caught some cod before returning south after 24 hours in the Hali area.

Eiríksson noted that certain species, like redfish, are practically protected, leading to fishing restrictions in areas where they are present. This affects the search for saithe in specific grounds and also impacts other areas like the Skerja Deeps, where freezer trawlers target silver smelt.

A full trip for Viðey typically amounts to around 190 tonnes. The vessel is expected to dock tomorrow if the remaining ten tonnes are not secured today.
