Broadcom to Lend Anthropic Up to $42 Billion for AI Infrastructure
US semiconductor firm Broadcom has agreed to lend AI startup Anthropic up to $42 billion for infrastructure costs. The financing may convert into Anthropic shares.

US semiconductor firm Broadcom has agreed to provide up to $42 billion in financing to AI startup Anthropic, according to regulatory filings. The substantial lending arrangement is intended to support Anthropic's significant investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The deal, revealed in Anthropic's initial public offering filing, extends beyond simple financing. It also encompasses compute supply, equipment leasing, and other financial arrangements. Reports suggest this financing could potentially convert into Anthropic shares, indicating a deep strategic alignment between the two companies.
This funding is expected to cover a significant portion of Anthropic's estimated $125.2 billion five-year lease for tensor processing unit (TPU) capacity. By 2027, Anthropic is projected to become Broadcom's largest customer for compute resources. This arrangement builds on Anthropic's existing relationship with Google Cloud, which it selected as its preferred provider in 2023.
Anthropic has previously noted that the Google-provided TPU infrastructure was co-developed with Broadcom. However, in its filing, Anthropic cautioned that Broadcom's dual role as both a hardware supplier and financing partner could lead to conflicts of interest impacting pricing and access to computing resources.
