BSD Builders Delivers Microturbines for Scripps Mercy Hospital
BSD Builders has successfully delivered two microturbines to Scripps Mercy Hospital, adding 2 megawatts of supplemental power. The transport of the 94,000-pound units down a steep slope involved complex logistics.
BSD Builders, Inc. has achieved a significant engineering milestone by delivering two microturbines, each weighing 47,000 pounds, to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest as part of an 18-month energy infrastructure project. The successful placement behind the hospital's central energy plant required intricate logistics, including navigating the combined 94,000 pounds of equipment down a 200-foot, 17% grade slope.
The project adds 2 megawatts of supplemental power to the facility. The newly positioned infrastructure, which includes a main switchboard and a new electrical transformer, forms the backbone of an efficient cogeneration system. Advanced heat recovery modules will capture waste heat from power generation to supply the hospital's heating and hot water needs.
Jeff Blair, Co-Founder and CEO of BSD Builders, described the milestone as a unique and rewarding puzzle due to severe site constraints, emphasizing the need for customized structural and logistical solutions for the challenging transport.
Ryan Peña, Project Manager for Corporate Facilities at Scripps Health, highlighted the system's importance for hospital resilience. The technology introduces "island mode" capabilities, ensuring electricity generation during grid disruptions or natural disasters, providing an additional layer of protection for critical hospital operations. BSD Builders is now proceeding with final integration and testing, aiming for completion by year-end.
