Buc-ee's Sues Small Business Over Beaver Mascot Similarity

Texas-based travel center chain Buc-ee's is continuing its aggressive defense of its intellectual property by filing a new lawsuit against a small business in Ohio. The company accuses Beaver's Mini Mart of trademark infringement and unfair competition, citing similarities in mascots, names, and color schemes.

Buc-ee's, known for its distinctive beaver mascot and popular products like Beaver Nuggets, has previously sued several smaller businesses on similar grounds. The latest legal action targets Beaver's Mini Mart, which Buc-ee's argues misleads consumers by being too similar to the Buc-ee's brand. The lawsuit claims Beaver's Mini Mart's use of a cartoon beaver logo and red color scheme creates confusion and implies an association with Buc-ee's.

The lawsuit was filed in Ohio shortly after Buc-ee's opened its first location in the state. However, the case has drawn significant support for the smaller Beaver's Mini Mart from local residents and online commentators. Apparel company Cincy Shirts has launched a campaign to raise funds for Beaver's Mini Mart's legal defense.

The situation has sparked broader discussion about Buc-ee's legal strategy. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine publicly urged Buc-ee's to drop the lawsuit, calling it "ridiculous." Vic Boparai, owner of Beaver's Mini Mart, expressed surprise at the community support and hopes for a swift resolution.
