The German Federal Police (Bundespolizei) and security firm secunet have expanded the use of their mobile applications for checking identity documents and other credentials. The latest update brings the applications to iOS devices, enabling their use across all common mobile platforms.

The applications are based on secunet's biomiddle software platform. They allow police authorities to read and verify electronic identity documents, such as passports or national ID cards, directly via a mobile device. The system can also compare the facial image stored on the chip with the person's live image.

The Bundespolizei initially introduced the apps in 2018 as part of efforts to modernize digital policing. The update to iOS support, leveraging new NFC capabilities in iOS 13, removes the need for separate hardware to read identity documents.

Bundespolizei and secunet are now offering the developed technology to state police forces as well. Several state police departments are already using secunet's developed applications in their daily work. The mobile capabilities of the apps enhance police information access and contribute to internal security in Germany.
