Bureau Veritas approves North Sea CO2 pipeline requalification
Bureau Veritas has completed the assessment and requalification of a Petrogas pipeline for CO2 transport in the Dutch North Sea, marking a milestone for carbon capture and storage projects.

Bureau Veritas has successfully completed the assessment and requalification of a Petrogas pipeline for CO₂ transport in the Dutch North Sea. This development is a significant step for carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in the region.
On May 28, 2026, it was confirmed that the existing 20-inch pipeline between the Q1 block and the EVOS terminal can be adapted for CO₂ transport as part of the Abeona CCS project. This initiative aims to enable CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure in the Dutch North Sea by repurposing existing assets.
This marks one of the first instances of an existing offshore North Sea oil pipeline being requalified for CO₂ transport associated with a Dutch offshore CCS value chain. The project demonstrates how legacy infrastructure can be repurposed for the energy transition, supporting industrial decarbonisation in the Netherlands, particularly the Greater Amsterdam region.
Bureau Veritas conducted the assessment as an independent, competent body under Dutch mining regulations. The assessment's summary report concluded that no limiting conditions were identified to prevent progression to the next phase of requalification. This assessment is a major technical and regulatory step forward, though further validation and certification are required for long-term operation.
