Bureau Veritas classes first LNG-fuelled oil/chemical tanker
Bureau Veritas has classed the Ternsund, the first newbuilding LNG-fuel oil/chemical tanker. The vessel is the first of four similar ships built in China.

Classification society Bureau Veritas has classed the Ternsund, the first newbuilding oil/chemical tanker to be fuelled by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The 15,000 dwt vessel was built by Avic Dingheng in China and delivered to Danish owner Terntank Rederi AS in June 2016. It is the first in a series of four such ships, and the first time a Wärtsilä RT-flex50-D dual-fuel engine has been installed and classed by Bureau Veritas. The Ternsund became the first ship ever to bunker LNG in the port of Rotterdam in August 2016, qualifying for reduced port dues. Bureau Veritas has previously led in the classification of gas carriers and is now extending this expertise to other ship types using LNG as fuel. The vessel is designed to carry nine different grades of cargo in 16 tanks and will operate in Northern European waters. The Wärtsilä engine delivers 5,850 kW, powering the ship to a service speed of 14.5 knots. LNG fuel is stored in two Type C tanks onboard, each with a capacity of 315 cubic meters. Established in 1828, Bureau Veritas is a global provider of testing, inspection, and certification services. The company assists clients in ensuring their assets, products, and processes meet quality, safety, and environmental standards.
