Bureau Veritas, a global entity in testing, inspection, and certification, has introduced Origin, a system designed to offer comprehensive food traceability using blockchain technology. This solution allows consumers to access detailed information about a product's entire journey from its origin to the consumer.

The Origin system was presented to an international audience on March 5, 2018, in Tokyo at the Global Food Safety Conference. According to the company, the technology provides a smart and practical way for shoppers to view the history of a product by scanning a QR code in-store, thereby enabling informed purchasing decisions.

For players in the food industry, including brands and retailers, Origin is presented as a cost-effective tool. It reportedly enhances supply chain visibility and allows for real-time management of product recalls. Bureau Veritas states that multiple projects are currently underway with clients, indicating the technology is ready for broader market deployment.

Vincent Bourdil, Vice-President of Food at Bureau Veritas, commented that the launch of Origin follows extensive development work aimed at increasing confidence in transactions. He described Origin as a beneficial solution for both consumers and all parties in the supply chain, adding value to the final product and aiding in reputation management through efficient recall processes.
