Burger King closed 51 locations across the United States in fiscal year 2025, ending the year with 6,650 restaurants nationwide. The closures occurred as the fast-food chain opened 39 new restaurants during the same period.
Of the 6,650 locations at the end of fiscal 2025, 5,518 were franchised and 1,132 were company-owned. The company reported 87 new U.S. openings, but 48 of these were existing company-owned restaurants sold to new franchise operators, meaning 39 were new builds. Burger King closed a total of 103 locations, with 90 of these being net closures after accounting for reacquired franchise locations.
Parent company Restaurant Brands International (RBI) acquired Carrols Restaurant Group, Burger King's largest franchisee, in May 2024. This acquisition converted 1,023 franchise locations to company-owned stores, significantly increasing the number of company-owned outlets at the start of 2025.
Despite the net decrease in locations, Burger King's U.S. same-store sales increased by 8.5% in the second quarter of fiscal 2026. The company recently updated its signature Whopper sandwich and has surpassed Wendy's to become the second-largest burger chain in the U.S. by systemwide sales.
