Burnout Shifts Focus from Workload to Lack of Meaning

A new generation of workers, particularly Gen Z, is experiencing burnout not from excessive workload, but from a perceived lack of meaning in their jobs. This contrasts with the traditional understanding of burnout, which focused on long hours and high task volume.

Deloitte's 2025 global workplace survey found that only 6% of Gen Z respondents prioritize reaching senior-level positions as a career goal. While ambitious, their focus is on learning and development, with a desire to understand the ultimate purpose of their career path before committing decades.

Companies are increasingly recognizing that traditional perks like remote work options and generous vacation time do not fully address employee burnout stemming from a sense of meaninglessness. The core issue is shifting from the quantity of work to the 'why' behind it.

Journalist Jennifer Breheny Wallace highlights a fundamental human need to feel that one matters and has something of value to contribute. Modern employees seek not just appreciation, but work they find intrinsically valuable.

Moving forward, organizations that can clearly articulate the purpose of work and connect daily tasks to tangible outcomes will be better positioned. Simply offering flexibility or rest does not resolve burnout caused by work that lacks a sense of significance.
