Business leaders urge COP31 to prioritize clean electrification and heavy industry policy

A coalition of international business leaders has submitted a formal appeal to the COP31 presidency, calling for urgent policy interventions to advance clean electrification and reduce emissions in the heavy industry sector. The signatories argue that current deployment rates for low-carbon technologies are insufficient to meet global climate targets.

According to the group, the absence of aggressive policy support means the world is currently on track for a 2.6°C warming by 2100. This trajectory significantly exceeds the goal of keeping global warming well below 2°C, a threshold that remains central to the Paris Agreement framework.

The letter emphasizes that relying solely on market-driven adoption of new technologies will fail to deliver the necessary speed of transition. The business leaders are urging policymakers to implement frameworks that lower investment risks for clean industrial technologies and accelerate the phase-out of high-emission processes.
