BYD, Geely, Chery Rank Among Top 10 Global Automakers for First Time

Three Chinese automakers โ€“ BYD, Geely, and Chery โ€“ have achieved a historic milestone by ranking among the world's top 10 largest automakers by sales for the first time during the first half of 2026. This development signals a notable transformation in the global automotive landscape.

Collectively, BYD, Geely, and Chery accounted for 13.5% of global vehicle sales in the period. Toyota remains the leading automaker with an 11% market share, followed by Volkswagen at 8.1%. BYD secured sixth place with a 4.8% share, Geely Group followed at 4.6%, and Chery Group tied with Ford for ninth place at 4.1%.

The surge in Chinese automakers' global presence is largely driven by a substantial increase in exports. China shipped 5.096 million vehicles overseas in the first half of 2026, a year-on-year increase of 65.3%. Notably, exports of new energy vehicles (NEVs) more than doubled to 2.355 million units.

This expansion occurs as traditional giants like Toyota and Volkswagen maintain their leading positions, while some European and American manufacturers face slower growth due to challenges in electrification transition and rising supply chain costs. Chinese brands have leveraged their strengths in EV supply chains and rapid advancements in battery technology, electric drivetrains, and smart vehicle systems.

Beyond exports, Chinese automakers are actively investing in overseas research and development, manufacturing facilities, and sales networks, with localization becoming a key strategic element. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), exports have become a critical growth engine amid intensifying competition in the domestic market.
