ByteDance Establishes New AI Data and Security Department
Chinese technology giant ByteDance has reportedly created a new primary department focused on AI data and security. This unit is parallel to previously established AI departments like Seed and Flow.
Chinese technology giant ByteDance has reportedly established a new primary department dedicated to AI data and security. This new entity operates parallel to the company's previously formed AI departments, Seed and Flow, as well as its Douyin business.
The department will be led by Wang Yinglei (Adam Wang), who previously served as head of platform responsibility and head of live streaming for TikTok. His previous work leading TikTok's live streaming business was a significant revenue generator for the platform.
One of the foundational components of this new department is the Global Data team, established in 2023 by Fu Yue (Yuyi), an early member of the TikTok founding team. This team, comprising around 100 individuals, initially supported international services like Dola (TikTok's international version) and TikTok, before shifting to data procurement and quality control for Seed's model training.
Through this integration, ByteDance aims to create a large-scale data team that spans from foundational models to business applications. The department's core function will be to provide cross-modal data services for all of ByteDance's large models. Its responsibilities encompass the entire data production lifecycle, including standard setting, sourcing and procurement, synthetic cleaning, and quality evaluation.
