ByteDance Halts First-Gen AI Glasses, Plans Dual Models for Second Gen
Chinese tech giant ByteDance has reportedly halted development of its first-generation "Doubao" AI glasses. A second generation is planned for the second half of 2026 with two distinct models.

ByteDance, the Chinese technology conglomerate, has reportedly canceled the development of its first-generation "Doubao" AI glasses, despite the product reaching its final stages before a planned launch. This decision comes as the company shifts its focus to a redesigned second generation.
The second generation of "Doubao" AI glasses is now slated for release in the latter half of 2026. ByteDance plans to offer two distinct versions: a "full-featured" model equipped with a camera, speakers, and microphone, and a "lightweight" version that omits speakers to target a weight of just over 20 grams. The chip configuration has also been updated to a Qualcomm AR1 combined with Hengxuan BES2800.
In addition to the product redesign, ByteDance has changed its manufacturing partners. The first generation utilized a reference design from Goertek, while the second generation will be manufactured by Longcheer Tech. This overhaul suggests a significant strategic adjustment for the company's wearable technology ambitions.
The full-featured model aims to compete with existing smart glasses like Ray-Ban Meta, offering capabilities for photography, calls, and AI interaction. The lightweight version prioritizes minimal weight for enhanced comfort. Both are expected to launch in the second half of 2026, though details for consumer electronics can change.
ByteDance is also pursuing a separate line of smart glasses using holographic waveguide technology, developed by its PICO team. The company's product roadmaps for consumer electronics are subject to change.
