ByteDance Reportedly Forms New AI Data and Safety Department
Chinese technology firm ByteDance has reportedly established a new top-level department focused on AI data and safety. The unit is led by a former TikTok executive overseeing platform responsibility.
ByteDance, the Chinese technology conglomerate, has reportedly created a new, high-level department dedicated to artificial intelligence data and safety. This new unit has been placed organizationally alongside key ByteDance functions such as Seed, Flow, and Douyin.
The department is headed by Wang Yinglei, a former executive at TikTok who previously managed platform responsibility and livestreaming operations. The unit reportedly evolved from a global data team that was established in 2023.
Its responsibilities encompass a range of AI data-related activities, including data sourcing, synthetic data generation, data cleaning, and the establishment of standards and quality evaluation for ByteDance's foundational AI models. This team has previously provided support to TikTok, Dola (the international version of Doubao), and Seed.
This organizational move underscores ByteDance's increasing emphasis on the critical data and safety aspects of AI development, reflecting broader industry trends where robust data governance and safety protocols are paramount.
