ByteDance restricts employee access to third-party AI tools

ByteDance is implementing new restrictions on the use of third-party artificial intelligence tools, including Claude and Codex. Employees are now barred from using personal subscriptions for these services to process L4-level code repositories and internal Feishu documentation, citing risks related to data leakage.

Technology Vice President Hong Dingkun addressed internal concerns, stating the measures focus on protecting confidential information classified as L3 or higher. He dismissed claims that the move is intended to force adoption of internal tools, describing such a strategy as ineffective for product development.

This policy marks an expansion of previous security measures initiated in May 2025, which saw the company phase out third-party coding assistants like Cursor in favor of its proprietary tool, Trae. While the company maintains an interest in AI-driven productivity, it continues to draw strict boundaries regarding the exposure of core technical assets to external service providers.

The phased rollout is expected to impact thousands of technical staff as the firm navigates the balance between utilizing external AI capabilities and maintaining internal data security protocols.
