ByteDance's PICO Appoints New Head Amid Preparation for Mixed-Reality Device

ByteDance's PICO XR business has named Li Xiaokai as its new head, following the departure of founder Zhou Hongyi for personal career reasons. The leadership change is not expected to alter PICO's current strategy, research and development endeavors, or product timelines.

The company is preparing to introduce a new mixed-reality (MR) device, codenamed Project Swan, later this year. This upcoming device is anticipated to feature a MicroOLED display and an MR chip developed in-house by PICO. It is also expected to incorporate a dual-chip design and boast a system perception latency of 12 milliseconds.

Li Xiaokai joined PICO in 2021 and has been responsible for core product and technology development. The PICO OS 6 operating system is also expanding the platform's capabilities beyond virtual reality applications to encompass spatial computing, with integrated support for Android applications, browsers, 3D content, and the OpenXR and WebXR standards.
