California Allocates $4.7 Million for Veteran Psychedelic Therapy Research

California has allocated $4.7 million to its Office of Precision Medicine for research into psychedelic-assisted therapy for veterans, following Governor Gavin Newsom's signing of Assembly Bill 113. This state funding represents the first of its kind in California and is among the largest state-level investments specifically for veterans in U.S. history.

The appropriation is the result of advocacy efforts by veteran organizations over several years. VETS, a group supporting the initiative, stated the funding signifies a commitment to addressing the mental health needs of California's veteran population. The funds will support studies examining the efficacy of psychedelic compounds in treating conditions prevalent among veterans, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

This initiative is expected to explore alternative treatment avenues for veterans who have not found sufficient relief through conventional therapies. The move aligns with a growing national and international trend of investigating psychedelic substances for therapeutic applications.

Assembly Bill 113 is effective immediately. Research activities are anticipated to commence in 2026, with findings expected to inform future mental health policies for veterans.
