The California Energy Commission (CEC) has adopted the first-ever energy efficiency standards for replacement tires on passenger vehicles in the United States. The new regulations, passed unanimously, aim to limit the rolling resistance of tires, a key factor in fuel and electricity consumption.

The standards will be implemented in two phases, starting around 2029. The first phase sets a rolling resistance limit of 9.0 N/kN, with a second phase from 2033 onwards tightening the requirement to 7.2 N/kN. Lower rolling resistance means less energy is lost as the tire rotates, leading to improved fuel economy for gasoline vehicles and extended range for electric vehicles.

The CEC projects that these new standards will save California drivers nearly $1 billion annually in fuel and electricity costs. Furthermore, the regulations are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2 million metric tons per year, equivalent to removing approximately 400,000 gasoline-powered cars from the road. The initiative will also decrease the state's overall energy demand.

Individual drivers stand to benefit financially. The commission estimates that each gasoline vehicle driver could save around $179 in fuel costs over the lifespan of a set of tires. While replacement tires may see a slight cost increase, the long-term energy savings and environmental benefits are projected to be substantial.
