California DMV Canceling 11,000 Driver's Licenses Without Stated Reason

California's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has begun notifying around 11,000 drivers that they must retake their written permit test within 30 days. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of their driver's licenses.

The DMV stated it identified "anomalies" in certain knowledge test results, prompting the requirement for affected individuals to return to a DMV office for a new exam. The agency has not elaborated on the nature of these anomalies, declining to specify if they involved suspected cheating, remote testing issues, vendor flags, or other irregularities.

DMV spokesperson Jonathan Groveman confirmed the notifications in a statement to Inc. "Approximately 11,000 individuals are being notified and required to return to the DMV to retake the test within 30 days," Groveman said. "Ensuring the integrity of our testing process is essential. Knowledge tests play a critical role in confirming that drivers understand the rules of the road before they are licensed to drive in California."

The agency reiterated that the review was a DMV-led initiative conducted as part of its regular internal monitoring. Groveman clarified that the issue is neither AI-related nor caused by internal technical problems. This lack of transparency leaves thousands of California drivers facing a deadline to retake an already passed test or risk losing their state-issued licenses.
