SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Fire Foundation (CFF) is recognizing California's firefighters throughout October, designated as California Firefighter Appreciation Month by the state legislature. October 3, 2026, has been declared California Firefighters Memorial Day.

This year, the CFF is also highlighting the long-term health risks faced by firefighters, including occupational cancer and post-traumatic stress injuries (PTSI). The legislature's resolution acknowledges that these hazards have led to fatalities within the profession. CFF reported a 45% increase in PTSI-related deaths in 2026 compared to the previous year.

On October 3, the annual California Firefighters Memorial Ceremony will be held in Sacramento to honor 37 fallen firefighters whose names will be added to the California Firefighters Memorial. This memorial, maintained by CFF, already bears over 1,500 names and is undergoing an expansion to accommodate future additions.

In 2025, CFF provided significant disaster relief following major events, including the Los Angeles wildfires. The organization distributed over $5 million in statewide aid, with more than $1.8 million directed to nearly 23,000 individuals impacted by the Los Angeles fires. Support was also extended to firefighters and their families who experienced losses or health issues.

The California Fire Foundation encourages public support through donations. These contributions help fund programs offering immediate assistance, family support, scholarships, disaster relief, and the maintenance of the memorial for fallen firefighters.
