California Launches Air Conditioning Repair Program for Military Community
A new statewide program, Cool Air Salute, will cover 95% of vehicle A/C repair costs, up to $1,500 per car, for eligible veterans, service members, and their families in California.
Sacramento, Calif. – The Cool Air Rebate Program has launched a new initiative, Cool Air Salute, aimed at assisting California's large military community with essential vehicle repairs. The program provides coverage for 95% of air conditioning repair costs, up to a maximum of $1,500 per vehicle, for qualifying veterans, active-duty service members, and their dependents.
The Cool Air Salute program officially began on July 17, 2026, at the San Diego Stand Down event. This initiative is designed to help individuals on fixed or limited incomes maintain reliable air conditioning in their vehicles, a critical need given the state's high temperatures.
This program offers a higher reimbursement rate than the standard Cool Air Rebate, which provides 90% coverage for the general public. The Car Care Council administers the program, which is funded by unclaimed deposits from R-134a refrigerant canisters, in coordination with the California Air Resources Board.
California is home to approximately 1.6 million veterans and 157,000 active-duty service members. The Car Care Council has previously injected $8 million into the local economy by supporting nearly 500 automotive repair shops to address refrigerant leaks and ensure vehicle safety.
